Some evenings do not need a plan. We set up a private barbecue on the beach exclusively for you and whoever you bring along, so there is no crowd and no other tables, just your own stretch of sand as the sun goes down over the Atlantic. Torches and lanterns light the table once the light fades, part of the setting rather than an extra. The menu is built around the ingredients Gambians barbecue best, with vegetarian options if you need them, and if you fancy something a little more special, lobster here comes at a fraction of what it costs back home.
As the light fades, a local group of djembe drummers arrives and gives everything they have for half an hour of genuine, high-energy drumming. What happens next is anyone’s guess. Join in, dance, sing along, or just sit back with a drink in hand, there is no set programme after that point. It is your evening, shaped entirely by your own mood: relaxed and unscripted, exactly how a holiday evening should feel.
