Coconut Island, better known locally as Jinack Island, sits quietly on The Gambia’s North Bank, cut off from the mainland by the river and, in many ways, by time itself. This full-day adventure crosses the Gambia River by ferry and continues by 4-wheel drive to reach a place that still moves at its own pace.
The day opens with a proper Gambian breakfast at a local restaurant near the Banjul Ferry Terminal, setting you up for the crossing ahead. The ferry ride itself is part of the appeal, a slow, scenic passage across the river before a 4-wheel drive picks up the journey on the North Bank and carries you onward to the island.
On Jinack Island, a guided walk through the local village introduces you to the community and its coconut groves, where farming still follows methods passed down through generations. It is an unhurried, genuine look at island life, far removed from anything staged for visitors.
Lunch is served at a beachfront restaurant, after which the rest of the afternoon is yours: swim in the Atlantic, stretch out on the sand, or wander the shoreline with a camera. It is a day built for couples, families and solo travellers drawn to The Gambia’s quieter side, one river crossing away from the coast.
