Tanji’s mangrove channels are best seen at paddling pace, and this kayaking trip is built entirely around that idea. Rather than watching the scenery from a boat deck, you’re moving through it yourself, close enough to spot crabs on the roots and birds overhead without a motor drowning out the quiet.
After a short safety briefing and a quick fit for your kayak, paddle and life jacket, the guide leads the way into the winding channels. The mangroves close in gently on either side, and it doesn’t take long before the noise of the coast disappears entirely. Along the way there’s a good chance of spotting colourful birdlife, fish, and crabs going about their business, while your guide explains just how much the mangrove ecosystem does for the coastline and the communities living alongside it.
There’s a proper pause partway through to take photos and simply sit with the surroundings before paddling back, and refreshments waiting once you’re off the water. Available as a morning or afternoon outing, it suits complete beginners just as well as anyone who’s kayaked before.
For a different, quieter angle on The Gambia’s coast, this is hard to beat.
