Makasutu is one of those places locals mention with real affection, and a day spent here shows exactly why. Part forest reserve, part living cultural showcase, it packs an unusual amount of Gambian life, tradition and wildlife into a single outing.
The morning opens with a walk through the forest itself, past indigenous trees and medicinal plants that your guide can name on sight, before a relaxed boat cruise through the mangrove creeks, keeping an eye out for monkeys and a good variety of birdlife along the banks.
What follows is harder to find anywhere else on a standard tour: a traditional palm wine tapper climbing a towering palm using techniques passed down for generations, then descending with the freshly harvested wine to share, and a visit to a marabout, a traditional healer and palm reader, who explains the part these figures play in Gambian community life. Traditional drumming and dance follow lunch, bringing the day’s cultural thread together with plenty of energy.
