Some days call for an itinerary. This one calls for the opposite: a full day on the River Gambia with nothing to do but watch the water go by. The Lazy Day River Cruise earns its name honestly, trading sightseeing checklists for a slow drift past mangroves, birdlife, and long stretches of open river.
The day starts at Denton Bridge, where a comfortable boat carries you out onto the calm waters of the Gambia. Tea or coffee arrives early, served the local way with warm Tapalapa bread, and from there the pace barely changes. There’s a stop for swimming or fishing for anyone who fancies it, though stretching out on deck with a camera works just as well.
Lunch is a proper buffet spread, rounded off with fresh watermelon, a good excuse to linger a while longer before the boat sets off again. The afternoon drifts by watching for birds and, with a bit of luck, monkeys along the banks, before the cruise turns back towards Denton Bridge as the light starts to soften.
It’s a full eight hours, yet it feels like far less effort than that, which is rather the point.
