Tanji Fishing Village & Costal Heritage Experience

Tanji Fishing Village & Costal Heritage Experience

Description

Tanji is one of the busiest working fishing villages on the Gambian coast, and there’s no better way to understand the country’s relationship with the sea than watching it in action. This half-day visit trades postcard beaches for something rawer and considerably more interesting.

Once you arrive, a guide leads you through the fish landing site just as boats are coming in, their hulls painted in the bright colours Gambian fishermen are known for. From there it’s a close look at the whole process: sorting, smoking, and drying fish using methods that have barely changed in generations, and a clear sense of how central this industry is to local livelihoods.

There’s time afterwards to wander the market, strike up conversations with people who work here every day, and take in a side of Gambian life that has nothing to do with tourism. Photographers tend to do particularly well here, especially on the afternoon departure, when the light softens and the boats return with the sunset behind them over the Atlantic.

Whether you choose the morning or the golden-hour afternoon slot, Tanji offers one of the most genuine, unfiltered experiences on the coast.
