Baobab Island sits quietly among the mangrove creeks of the Gambia River, a full day’s escape from the noise of the coast. After a 9:00 AM pick-up from your hotel, you’ll travel to the river and cross by traditional boat to the island itself, where the real adventure begins.
A two-hour guided cruise winds through the mangrove creeks, opening onto some of the best birdwatching in the area: herons, kingfishers and other river birds, along with crabs and wildlife tucked among the mangrove roots. Your guide knows these waters well and will point out what to look for, and why the mangroves matter to The Gambia’s environment, without turning the morning into a lecture.
Back on the island, a proper local lunch is waiting, served with bottled water and refreshments. What you do with the rest of the afternoon is entirely up to you: swim in the calm river shallows, relax in the shade, wander along the shore with your camera, or simply do nothing at all, which on Baobab Island turns out to be surprisingly easy.
It’s a day built for couples, families and solo travellers who’d rather trade the busier coastal spots for mangrove creeks and a slower pace, and still be back at their hotel by early evening.
